But mostly had to change the JSON Codec so that it knows about Version, too.
Because apparently it uses its own types for serialization and deserialization,

rietveld/bazaar: use 'bzr revision-info' instead of 'bzr log'

We don't need to deal with lots of flags to 'bzr log', instead use
'bzr revision-info' which just gives us the data we actually care
about.
Also, 'strings.Fields' is a simpler way to parse then doing
string searching for the right context.

Get faster test shutdown by doing a fake connect.

This requires fixing bug #884427, otherwise we get too much stipple in tests.
Otherwise the SocketServer defaults to the 0.01s timeout time, which adds up when
you have lots of tests.

Overall, this patch changes 'make check' from 2.172s down to 1.423s.

Using bufio doesn't seem to change the numbers.
os.Open and os.Stdout may already be buffered.
Anyway, 6prof shows:
1142 samples (avg 1 threads)
 34.94%compress/flate.*decompressor·huffmanBlock
 33.27%compress/flate.*decompressor·huffSym
 15.94%hash/crc32.update
  8.49%compress/flate.*decompressor·moreBits
  5.34%bufio.*Reader·ReadByte
  0.70%runtime.memmove

Which clearly says that 77% of the time is spent in flate, and
16% is spent in crc32 (total 92.6%). ReadByte doesn't seem like
much of the time in that scenario. Also, I think zlib itself
uses big buffers rather than byte-at-a-time. IIRC you pass it
a variable length buffer, and it tells you when it has consumed
that and needs more data to process.

Remove the error returns in favor of panic().

The immediate feeling, less clear state because we no longer add extra
state info to the error message. Probably a worthy trade for getting
a real traceback that has *even more* error info. (At the expense that
Parse() suppresses getting a traceback.)
Much clearer code without all the 'err' checking statements.

Possibly marginally faster (183ms). Probably fewer if checks
in trade for panic which probably has to be runtime checked
anyway.

Bug #740759, There was one more case that was creating raw Failure objects.

This now means that 'initialize' generates 0 Failure exc_tb cases. Overall
speedup is from 703ms baseline, to ~180ms. It is equivalent to hacking
Failure.__init__ to never save a traceback.

Something isn't 100% correct, because post-filter we end up with different counts.
The performance is pretty darn good, though.

A TODO entry.

Overall this experiment hasn't been particularly beneficial. The final speed
is still slower than the existing code, and the primary knob that reduced
peak memory size is to change the stride for large content. Which can be
trivially added to the existing match code.

I like the code quite a bit, but I wish I had more to show for the amount
of effort put into it.

Workaround the redirect bug and implement it ourself.
possible_transports provides all the caching that we would hope to get from
the redirection code, and then some. Testing shows that it does, indeed save
some extra connections. Not all of them, mostly because of the 15s timeout.
(We probe launchpad.net, find we need to download a big file from launchpadlibrarian.net
then spend >15s downloading. The next file reconnects to lp.net but not lpl.net)

Implement a crude --progress for 'testr load'.

We already had a few result classes, this just adds one.
Also, it is a bit unfortunate that inserter.stopTestRun() has
a return value, as none of the other result classes do, and
MultiTestResult certainly doesn't return it.

Change the match order.
We lose a tiny bit of precision, but it should increase our match speed.
Specifically, if a pattern is not ignored, we don't need to evaluate
the exclusion pattern. Further we don't need to evaluate the always-ignore
pattern unless the exclusion pattern matches.
The loss of precision is that if a pattern is always-ignore but not
excluded, then we don't add the '\!\!' back to the pattern.
The gain is that in the 'initial add' case, we only need to check one
match, and not 3. And in the 'ignored' case, we only need to check
2 matches, and not 3. This should help decrease the performance hit.

Handle newly added files.

Also handle files whose copyright would be correct according to committed
data, but now we have modified the file locally, and thus it needs
this years datestamp. (only currently active for only_changed since

Start playing around with an ObjProxy that can give prettier output.

Using a proxy object, we can look up extra info in the ObjManager
and generally give quick-info.
