Description of the change
This is a cherrypick of 574275e7, which just exposes a couple of new functions in python. I have tested functionality with transmageddon, and everything works.

I can see that this fix has been sponsored by Ian Lane, and probably not from this merge proposal because the commit in this branch looks incomplete: debian/
